Once upon a time, on the magical plains of Moonbeam roamed herds of unicorns (and horses with lofty aspirations). Legend even speaks of unicorns with wings, manes of fire and rainbow or even unicorns made of gold, steel and ice! Of course, that was just the beginning, new unicorns are being discovered over time, with new seasons bringing out all kinds of unicorns over time.
The Moonbeam smart contract platform is fairly young network, built on Polkadot's substrate system with EVM compatibility.
It is the stable counterpart to Moonriver, which is in turn considered the canary network/
As it is EVM compatible, it also supports users used to the Ethereum ecosystem, while giving developers the same environment and system to run their dApps. All of this, while reaping the benefits of natively supporting Polkadot's cross-chain.
As with the rest of Polkadot's ecosystem Moonbeam uses a Proof-of-Stake mechanism meaning it is both environmentally friendly, and much more cost effective than both Bitcoin and Ethereum.
